Our technicians undergo 800 hours of internal training in heating oil, propane and HVAC systems that is accredited by the state of Maryland. They also hone their skills by attending classes at the Shymansky Institute in La Plata. This training program, which has been honored by the Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Distributors Association, is affiliated with the College of Southern Maryland.

Heritage
SMO was founded in 1926 when two engineers, Jim Wills and Harold Swann, acquired the La Plata Oil and Mechanicsville Oil Companies. In those days SMO only handled three products : kerosene, gasoline and motor oil.

In 1937, with the invention of the gun type burner, fuel oil came into its own, creating an ever-increasing market for home heating. That year, SMO began deliveries on an automatic basis—the first such service available to customers in the Southern Maryland area.

Today, as was the philosophy in 1926, SMO is still dedicated to providing the highest level of home comfort possible for our customers.
